What bulk SMS software is, and how this one works

Bulk SMS software sends one text campaign to a list of phone numbers, with each message personalised. Many SMS tools bundle the software and the message credit together, so you never quite see what a text really costs. Ultra SMS separates them. It is an app on your computer or phone, and the messages go through an account you hold directly with an SMS gateway such as Twilio, Vonage, MSG91 or Fast2SMS, at that gateway's published rates.

The part that saves money is the segment counter. A plain text message holds 160 GSM-7 characters. One curly quote or emoji switches the whole message to Unicode, which holds 70. Gateways charge per segment, so a small wording change can double a campaign's cost. Ultra SMS shows the encoding, the segment count and the estimated cost as you type, and can replace lookalike characters for you before you send. For India, each message can carry the DLT Entity ID, sender ID and Template ID that operators check.

No software can promise delivery. Operators filter unregistered senders, unapproved templates in India and unregistered 10DLC traffic in the USA. Ultra SMS helps you get those details right.

What you pay your gateway

SMS gateways charge per message segment, at a rate that depends on the destination country and sometimes the route. Ultra SMS shows the number of segments and, with your rate entered, the estimated cost before you send.

Some countries add one-off or monthly fees for sender registration: for example A2P 10DLC brand and campaign registration in the USA, or DLT registration in India. Those are paid to your gateway or the registry, not to us.

What Ultra SMS will not do

Better to know now than after you buy. The free trial lets you test all of this with your own gateway.

Ultra SMS does not include SMS credit; you need an account with a supported gateway, or one with an HTTP API.
It does not register your DLT entity, sender IDs or templates for you; that is done on an Indian operator's DLT portal.
Delivery reports depend on your gateway: some confirm delivery to the phone, others only that they accepted the message.
It is not a two-way chat inbox. Replies, including STOP, arrive in your gateway account; add opt-outs to Ultra SMS's list by import or by hand.
Scheduled campaigns send only while the app is running.
MMS (picture messages) are not supported.

Questions about bulk SMS software

Can I send bulk SMS from my computer without a gateway?

No. Ultra SMS needs an account with an SMS gateway, which is the company that passes your messages to phone networks. Until one is connected, campaigns run in simulation mode and nothing is sent. There are 17 supported options, including any gateway with an HTTP API.

Which is the best SMS gateway for India?

That depends on your volume and the routes you need, so compare current rates yourself. MSG91, Fast2SMS, Gupshup, 2Factor, Exotel, Kaleyra and SMSGatewayHub all have setup guides on this site, and all of them need your DLT registration to be in place.

What do I need to send bulk SMS in India?

A DLT registration on an operator's portal, with your entity, your approved sender IDs (headers) and your approved templates, plus an Indian gateway account. Ultra SMS holds those IDs and checks your text against the template, but the registration itself is something you do with the operator.

What do I need to send bulk SMS in the USA?

Business texting to US numbers normally needs A2P 10DLC brand and campaign registration or a verified toll-free number, arranged through your gateway. Without it, carriers filter your messages. Those fees go to your gateway, not to us.

How do I work out what a campaign will cost?

Enter your gateway's price per SMS part. Ultra SMS multiplies the parts per message by your recipients and shows the total before you start. The built-in cost calculator does the same for a message you are only planning.

Is sending bulk SMS legal?

Yes, when the people on your list agreed to it and you honour opt-outs. The rules vary by country, for example TRAI's rules in India and the TCPA in the USA, so check the ones that apply to you. Ultra SMS keeps an opt-out list and adds STOP wording to new campaigns by default.
